Do I have to vacuum first?
Not for everyday crumbs and spills. If the floor has a lot of grit or hair, vacuum first.
How large an area can it do?
About 100 m² per 300 ml tank and up to 30 minutes per charge, according to Dyson.
How do I clean it?
Empty the dirty water and rinse the roller after use. Practise taking it apart and putting it back a few times at first – it's quick once you get the knack.
How does it differ from the W1 PencilWash?
The W1 PencilWash has a denser roller with 84,000 filaments, an anti-tangle comb, longer run time and more area per tank. The PencilWash is the lighter, simpler model.

Description
A slim floor cleaner for everyday spills and crumbs on hard floors. The handle is just 38 mm in diameter and, according to Dyson, weighs 380 g in the hand because the water tank sits down at the head. You steer it with a simple twist of the wrist.
The microfibre roller with 64,000 filaments picks up wet spills and dry dirt at the same time. Clean water is fed from eight points, and dirty water and debris are removed from the roller on every turn. The roller is motor-driven, so the head glides forward by itself, and there's a MAX mode for dried-on stains.
The head tilts back 170° and has a flexible neck, so you get under low furniture and around table legs. According to Dyson the battery lasts 30 minutes and the 300 ml tank covers about 100 m². Afterwards it stands in its charging dock with a drip tray under the head.
